Sambar Rice – சாம்பார் சாதம்
Ingredients
- Toor Dal – 80g
- Rice – 120g
- Medium Onion – 1
- Drumstick – 1/2
- Carrot – 1
- Tomato – 1
- Tarmarind – A lemon size
- Asafoetida – A pinch
- Turmeric Powder – 2 tsp
- Chana dal – 1/2 tsp
- Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
- Red Chilli – 1
- Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Coriander seeds – 1 tsp
- Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp
- Coconut – 1
- Curry leaves – Few
- Coriander leaves – Few
- Ghee – Required
- Oil – Required
- Salt – Required
How to Prepare
Total Preparation time: 10-15 minutes
- Wash rice and toor dal cleanly then soak it in 380ml water for 30 minutes, add salt and cook it well then transfer into a bowl and mash them well and keep aside
- Slice the carrots, chop toamato, cut drumstick into little finger size, grate coconut, slice onion separately and keep aside
- Soak tamarind, mash it well and remove the pulp and keep this tamarind water aside
- Take a pan, add urad dal, chana dal and red chillies and fry them without oil till dals become lightly golden
- Then add coriander seeds, fry them for 1 minute, then add fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds
- Once it emits good smell, move them into the wide bowl
- After it cooled completely and grind them nicely like powder and save them in a Jar. This is our sambar powder
- Take a pan, add 1 tsp oil, 1/2 ghee and once oil heats up add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, red chilli and curry leaves
- Fry them till the curry leaves become crispy, then add Asafoetida and mix it well
- After that add onions saute for 2 minutes then add carrots, drumstick and saute for another 2 minutes
- Then add chopped tomato, turmeric powder and saute for 3-4 minutes
- Add some water and cook them for 5 minutes till vegetables become soft
- After that add tamarind water, salt and prepared sambar powder and mix well
- Close pan and boil them for 5 minutes
- Then add mashed rice and dal and mix it well in low flame for 1 minute
- Now the tasty Sambar rice is ready for serve
